Let the day do its thing.
Set a schedule, follow sunrise and sunset, or switch looks with light and dark mode. Paper can pause on battery or in Low Power Mode.
Know when to disappear.
Exclude an app or a display. Snooze for a while. Pause for a presentation. Sometimes the right amount of paper is none.
03 / THE LITTLE DETAILS

Give each display its own intensity. Assign a look to a particular app, bring in a Deckle recipe, or use Shortcuts to put Paper into your routine. It lives in the menu bar and stays out of your clicks.

Actually free?
Paper is free and open source, and it always will be. Download it, use it, tinker with it. That’s the whole arrangement.
Will it work on my Mac?
Paper is built for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later. It does not support Intel Macs, Windows, or Linux.
Does it read or record my screen?
No. Paper draws a texture over the screen. It does not capture what’s underneath, and it needs no Screen Recording, Accessibility, or Input Monitoring permission.
What about screenshots and screen sharing?
Use Pause for presentation before you capture or share, then check your preview. Different capture tools handle overlays differently; Paper doesn’t promise to hide from them.
Does anything leave my Mac?
Your settings and recipes stay local. City searches use Apple’s geocoding service, update checks use GitHub, and a diagnostic report is only sent when you review it and choose Send. The privacy page has the details.
The paper part owes a lot to Deckle.
A big thank-you to Deckle and its contributors. Paper uses Deckle’s texture renderer and paper catalog, and adapts its recipe model for imports. Their open-source work made this possible.
